Living In an Apartment Gives Me No Control Over HVAC Servicing

Whenever I think the air filter needs replaced or I find that my utility bill is higher than normal, I have to put in a request to have my HVAC unit serviced.

There are a lot of benefits to renting an apartment rather than owning a home. For starters, I don’t have to maintain a lawn or cut any grass. There is a landscaping crew that takes care of the entire apartment complex. I also don’t have to haul my trash off. There is a giant dumpster at the back of the complex that I drive my trash to. From there, a trash company will take the trash off to the landfill. While these are great things, there are some aspects of living in an apartment that aren’t so great. The biggest setback is the fact that I don’t own the apartment. Every month, I pay hundreds of dollars to live here and I’ll never get that money back like I would if I was making a mortgage payment. The second downfall is that I can’t control the HVAC maintenance. The apartment complex is responsible for hiring HVAC technicians to come service the HVAC equipment for each building. I can control the temperature of my apartment with my private thermostat, but I can’t control how efficiently it runs. Whenever I think the air filter needs replaced or I find that my utility bill is higher than normal, I have to put in a request to have my HVAC unit serviced. Sometimes, it takes weeks to hear back from the management company. I can’t service the HVAC system myself either, because a lot of the equipment is on the roof. I can’t wait until I can own my own home one day and control how often the HVAC equipment gets serviced.
