I’ve lived way out in the woods for the last 25 years.
- Leaving the hustle and bustle of the city and apartments with terrible HVAC was one of the smartest things I ever did.
But when I moved out of the city, I just kept going. And honestly, that was sort of the plan all along. I grew up in a rural area and spent a lot of time out in nature. So there was a real intuitive passion when it came to wanting to live off the grid. But it’s one thing to dream about it and a whole other one to do it. I grew up like pretty much everyone else inside the central air conditioning of my parent’s home. But to really live off the grid and live self sustainably is something that takes plenty of preparation. So it took me almost eight years after college to set up a situation where I could live off the grid and still do work. These days that’s made much easier thanks to satellite wi-fi. So I can actually deliver my work from home and I don’t have to make periodic trips into the city. As the years have gone by, the summer heat has been something that has plagued me more and more. I have plenty of heating from the wood stove for the winter but air conditioning was something I hadn’t had in more than twenty years. So I had the closest HVAC company come out and install a ductless heat pump. I have such a good solar array system that I can even enjoy residential HVAC all the way out here.
